Where is the school?    Cottlands Community School….

in Kwa Zulu Natal province of South Africa Google map

Who funds the school?    The primary school is….

funded by the South African government, the preschool is funded by us (Pene and John) and any money we are able to raise by sale of donated goods, books, posters and your kind donations.

How many teachers are there?     Along with…

the school principal there are 3 teachers and auxillary staff.

Are the preschool staff paid by the South African government?     No, we pay the wages…

for the preschool staff presently a total of $350 per month.

How many kids are at the preschool?     There are 35 local….

children who attend the preschool. Some are orphans others have parents who work locally.

Why are you not a charity?    Registering a charity in Australia….

is an expensive business!  We want to send ALL of our donations to the children. Unfortunately this means your kind donation is NOT tax deductible. However 100% of all money raised by donation or sale of goods is sent to the school

Who spends the money donated?    Each month….

we transfer Australian dollars to a travel card which is held by the school principal.  This money pays wages for the staff , kids lunches and incidentals.  The balance of the money is used to buy school equipment.

How is the money donated spent?  After the money for…

wages has been sent to the school principal, we are able to decide how to spend the rest.  Sometimes the school will ask for specific equipment – presently we are saving for a laptop – otherwise we spend goods some here in Australia which we take over twice a year. While we are in South Africa we buy more goods locally which helps the local economy and saves on freight.
